The hardware and software resources of the server are shared between many other users (typically 100-400). This can at times cause problems if some other user on the server has a very busy website, or a badly written code. Hosting provider is responsible for the upkeep of the server. The users have no control on versions of software on the server. This is the most common hosting used by most small web-sites.
We have found Hostpc.com to provide web-hosting services with a good price-performance.
Virtual Private Server (VPS)
The hardware and software resources of the server are still shared between many other users (typically 8-32). Each VPS runs its own server software such as Apache, MySQL, PHP, Qmail, Bind etc. Each user is responsible for the upkeep of his own server software. You are guaranteed certain hardware resources of CPU, RAM, Disk Space etc.
Some popular VPS providers are Liquidweb.com, Wiredtree.com and Servint.com.
These are similar to VPS's, except for the fact that in a dedicated server a whole physical server is available for your own use - no other customers use your server. Each user is fully responsible for the upkeep of his own server software and security.
Cloud based hosting is the latest paradigm. It enables dynamic allocation of server resources. Some cloud hosting providers are Liquidweb (stormondemand.com) and mediatemple.net.
